The Extech MN35 multimeter is the kind of compact meter I keep in a side drawer for quick voltage checks, continuity checks, and "is this wire actually dead?" questions. It's small, cheap, and does what it says. But I'd never hand it to a tech for a 480V panel troubleshooting session. Why? Because safety rating matters more than brand.
According to IEC 61010-1, a meter rated CAT III 600V is meant for distribution-level circuits. CAT IV is for utility connections. The MN35 might be perfectly fine for a lot of residential and light commercial work—just check the CAT rating on the casing before you trust it. If it only says CAT II, leave it in the drawer.

For a digital micrometer, look for a clear display, a lock nut, and calibration records. I send mine out for ISO 17025 calibration once a year. That sounds like overkill until you're arguing over a 0.002 mm tolerance on a rush replacement part.
I'm not 100% sure why cheap digital micrometers drift so quickly, but my best guess is temperature and rough handling. So buy a decent one—you don't need a Mitutoyo unless you're doing metrology, but avoid the $20 special.
Which Fluke multimeter should I buy?

But here's the honest part: you might not need a Fluke at all. And in my world, field life is rough on tools. Sometimes two meters beat one expensive meter.
