Extech in the Field: What 200+ Emergency Calls Taught Me About Test Instruments
After eight years and more than 200 emergency service callouts—most with the clock running and a client watching me work—I've got pretty firm opinions about which test instruments actually pay for themselves. Load Cells and Dial Indicators: Tools You Hope You Don't Need
Let me be direct about load cells: you don't carry them the way you carry a multimeter. Load cells live inside tanks, hoppers, conveyors, and scales. When a system under-reads on a production line, the fault is just as likely wiring, a corroded connector, or a damaged cable as the cell itself.
That's where my multimeter earns its keep. I've troubleshot more load cell circuits with a voltmeter than I ever expected. To be fair, I may be underselling load cells—if you do crane or rigging work, portable load cells are a whole different category. But in my world, most load cell problems turn out to be a voltage reading at the junction box.
Dial indicators are another story. A magnetic base, a dial indicator, and thirty minutes of careful work tell you exactly how far a shaft is out of alignment or a bearing is wearing. I use one maybe twice a year—but it has saved machines that would've cost six figures to replace. Recent example: a pump vibrating badly enough to rub its casing. Half an hour with a dial indicator showed exactly how much shim to add. No guesswork.
My budget advice here: buy these two at mid-range, not premium. A good dial indicator setup does the same field job as an expensive one for 90% of applications.
The Klein vs Fluke Multimeter Question
The question I get most from newer techs is the Klein vs Fluke multimeter thing. Both brands are quality. The Klein MM700 series gives you true RMS, auto-ranging, and a CAT III rating for about half the price of a Fluke 87V. The Fluke 117 is a gold standard for a reason—rugged, reliable, and the non-contact voltage detection just works. You wouldn't be making a mistake with either.
But if you ask me, the usual debate skips a step. A lot of technicians would be better off starting with a mid-range Extech meter—the EX330 or EX350, for example—and banking the savings. It covers most field diagnostics at a lower entry price.
Here's the counter-intuitive part: your test leads introduce more error than your meter does. Cheap leads have measurable resistance, flimsy tips, and insulation that hardens in cold weather. I blamed my meter for 'noisy readings' for years. Then I spent $60 on silicone-insulated leads with fine tips, and my measurements got noticeably more stable. A coworker asked what new meter I had bought. It was just better leads.
One more thing that's non-negotiable: the CAT rating. It's defined in IEC 61010-1, and it tells you how much transient voltage a meter can survive. A CAT III 600V meter is built for distribution panels; a CAT II meter is for wall outlets. If you work around live panels, spend the money on a meter with more safety margin. That's not a spec-sheet flex; it's the difference between a loud bang and a quiet walk away.
Where This Approach Falls Apart
I want to be honest about the limits, because the industry already has enough people overselling their gear.
A handheld thermo hygrometer is a diagnostic tool, not metrology equipment. If a client needs documented, NIST-traceable temperature and humidity data for a compliance report, that comes from a calibrated logger with a certificate, not from a field unit. There's a line between a fast answer and an official record, and it's important to know which side you're on.
The HD755 is superb for building air-side work, but it's not the tool for pulsating pressure or highly turbulent airflow. Those require a dedicated transducer and careful setup. And the leakage-check ritual with the hoses? It's every single time. I skipped it once to save time and then chased a phantom problem for forty-five minutes. Never again.
Also, a dial indicator that's been dropped reads confidently and lies. Send yours out for annual calibration. It's inexpensive, and it protects you when a client asks how sure you are.
And one final word on meters: if your daily world includes industrial three-phase or high-energy circuitry, ignore my budget advice. Buy the best meter you can afford. The gap between a $200 meter and a $450 meter isn't accuracy—it's headroom. In my opinion, that headroom is worth every dollar when your hands are the ones holding the probes.
Put it this way: in eight years of emergency work, no client has ever asked what brand my multimeter is. They ask how fast I can get there, and how sure I am when I say, "this is the problem." The Extech thermo hygrometer and the HD755 make me fast and sure. Load cell diagnostics and a good dial indicator catch the rare but expensive failures. And as for Klein vs Fluke?
