I coordinate field service for an industrial instrumentation company. That means when something breaks at 2 AM, I'm the one deciding which tools go into the truck. Over the last eight years, I've handled 200+ rush orders—or rather, enough that I stopped counting after 180—but too many to trust a spec sheet.

Live vs. Dead: The Avoidable Mistake

Price Transparency: What You're Really Paying For

I've seen a quote that looked $40 cheaper than another vendor, then turned out not to include a spare set of test leads or a calibration check.

As of early 2025, I'd put the EX330 in the ballpark of $80–120 and the EX655 somewhere $180–260 depending on accessories and seller. I don't quote pricing exactly because it moves. But the gap is real, and so is the regret if you buy the wrong one just to save money.

There's something satisfying about opening a case and seeing every lead, probe, and manual exactly where it should be. That's not a luxury; on a rush job, that's how you don't panic.

What if the Problem Isn't Electrical?

Here's a trap: after you've got the right Extech, you start thinking every problem is a measurement you already know how to solve. It's not.

If you need to know the flow rate through a large pipe, no multimeter or clamp meter will help. You want a clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter. It straps onto the outside of the pipe, sends ultrasonic signals through the wall, and gives you flow without cutting into the line. In emergency situations, that's a huge advantage because you don't need to drain the system or get hot work permits.

If the issue is mechanical—say a pump shaft is worn and you need to verify the diameter before ordering a replacement—you need a micrometer caliper, not an electrical meter. A micrometer caliper reads in thousandths of an inch. You turn the thimble until the spindle touches the part, then read the sleeve and thimble scales. It's a completely different skill, and it's one more reason a service bag can't be just one brand of one tool.

  • For motor currents, heater draws, battery chargers, or any live-load measurement: The EX655 clamp meter is a no-brainer. The ability to clamp and read in seconds is worth every extra dollar.
  • For flow measurement: Skip both and use an ultrasonic flow meter if you need a non-invasive answer fast.
  • For reading a utility meter on site: No meter needed. Just know how to read a Sensus water meter before you show up.

Bottom line: the EX330 isn't a worse meter than the EX655. It's a different tool. The goal isn't to own the fanciest thing in the catalog—it's to walk onto a job with the one tool that can answer the question before the deadline hits.
